When Swim Season Ends, the Work Doesn’t Stop

The Blue Hole swim season has officially come to an end, but that doesn’t mean things slow down at Blue Hole Regional Park. The off-season is actually one of our busiest times for projects and improvements around the park. During swim season, our focus is on keeping the park open, safe and running smoothly for thousands of visitors. Once the season ends, we can shift our attention to some of the projects that are harder to get done when the park is at its busiest. We have quite a few projects planned for the coming months. Below is a look into some of what our staff will be working on this off-season.

  • Playground Fence
    • We’ll be repairing and replacing the fence around the playground. This is one of those projects that isn’t particularly exciting, but it’s something that needs to be done and will make the area safer and look much better.
  • Connex Cleanout and New Storage
    • We’re also going to be cleaning out and reorganizing one of our storage containers. The goal is to create better storage for equipment and supplies used for our programs and special events. With everything we have going on throughout the year, having organized storage makes a big difference for our staff.
  •  Swim Lawn Revamp
    • This is one of our biggest projects. The swim lawn is the area that takes the most abuse during the summer. With thousands of people using it throughout the season, we’re going to spend some time this off-season working on ways to improve the area and get it into better shape for next year. The swim lawn will be closed to the public for two weeks (11/30-12/11) to tackle all these sub-projects.
      • Remove vines from trees
      • Aerate lawn
      • Top dress lawn
      • Add mulch around trees and in shaded areas
      • Replace the dock
      • Replace the rope swing chains
      • Replace fencing
      • Power wash existing structures and surfaces
      • Purchase new ladders for maintenance
      • Install permanent posts for “No Swimming” signs
      • Relocate existing “Give Nature a Chance” signs
      • Replace trash cans
      • Replace interpretive signage
  • Swim Lot Parking Stops
    • You’ll also see concrete parking stops installed in the swim parking lot. This will help define the parking spaces and keep vehicles from pulling farther into areas where they shouldn’t be.
  •  Leveled Treatment Area
    • Work on the leveled treatment area is another project on our list for this off-season. This is one of the less visible projects, but it’s still an important improvement to the park.
  •  Sand Volleyball Court Border
    • We’ll be adding a new border around the sand volleyball court to help keep the sand where it belongs and give the court a more finished look.
  •  Trail Along the Street
    • We’re also working on the trail along the street as we continue to improve connectivity and make it easier to get around the park.
  •  Road Maintenance and Restriping
    • And, of course, there’s always road maintenance. We’ll be doing some maintenance and restriping throughout the park to keep things in good shape before the next swim season begins.

These are just some of the projects we have planned. There is always a long list of things that need to be repaired, maintained or improved, and the off-season gives us the time to work on those things without having to work around the demands of swim season. So while Blue Hole Regional Park may be quiet for the next several months, there will still be plenty happening. We’ll be working behind the scenes to get things cleaned up, repaired and improved so that when next swim season rolls around, we’re ready to do it all over again.
