“Robert’s Roost” Dedication at Patsy Glenn Refuge on September 12
Robert Austin Currie moved to Wimberley with his family in 1991, a decade before Wimberley became a village and then officially became a City. He began his volunteer service almost as soon as the first landscaping project got underway at the newly opened Blue Hole Regional Park, installing native plants around the Blue Hole swim area.
In 2011, he earned his Painted Bunting pin marking him as a Hays County Master Naturalist. Over the years, Bob volunteered to video and document Master Naturalist classes and put them online. He has also produced several award-winning videos for the Texas Master Naturalist program.
In 2016 , he joined the Wimberley Birding Society board and took on the task of being the coordinator for the Patsy Glenn Refuge – a birding refuge in the heart of Wimberley. In that role, Bob undertook several projects that have enhanced the park. He coordinated with Jim McMeans, to spearhead efforts to install rainwater collection tanks, which are used to water the butterfly garden in the park. He also has coordinated countless workdays for master Master Naturalists and Birding Society members, tackling projects like improving trails and enhancing the berm around the bird blind among many other things. Bob loves the PGR and he loves nature.
In 2019 through 2024, Bob worked closely with landscape architect Jerry Lunow, and his crew of volunteers to create a wetland at PGR. Spearheaded by Lunow, the team designed and created a pond, which catches and diverts rainwater that used to flood the park. The area was later coined the Jerry Lunow Wetland in Jerry’s honor. One of Lunow’s latest projects of note was to install a bridge that visitors walk over to reach the rear section of the park. Without the work of Bob, Jerry and countless others, Patsy Glenn Refuge would not be as lush and beautiful as it is today, and we cannot thank them enough.
As was done with the Jerry Lunow Wetland, recently a seating area has been installed at PGR to honor Robert “Bob” Currie. The area consists of several stone benches and will be called “Robert’s Roost”. Mark you calendars, because the City of Wimberley and Wimberley Birding Society will be holding dedication ceremony to recognize and honor Bob’s many years of service at Patsy Glenn Refuge on September 12 @ 10 a.m. To know Bob is to love him, and if you do know him, he would love to see you at the dedication.
