Migratory Bird Day Festival: What to Expect

If you’ve been to our Migratory Bird Day seminar in the past, this year is going to feel a little different in the best way.

Wimberley Parks and Recreation is turning the traditional seminar into something more hands-on, more relaxed, and a lot more fun. The new Migratory Bird Day Festival is happening Saturday, May 9th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Community Pavilion at Blue Hole Regional Park, and it’s designed as a come-and-go morning for all ages.

Instead of sitting and listening, you’ll be able to move around, explore, and experience what makes this area so special for birds. Throughout the morning, there will be guided bird walks, interactive Project WILD games, and nature crafts that are easy to jump into, whether you’re coming with kids or just showing up solo. You can spend time at different activity stations, grab some refreshments, and connect with local organizations that are doing real conservation work right here in the Hill Country.

Wimberley is a designated Bird City and an important stopover spot for migratory birds, so this event is really about celebrating that. This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter,” focuses on citizen science and how everyday people play a role in tracking and protecting bird populations. You don’t have to be an expert birder to contribute. Just being curious and paying attention goes a long way.

You’ll also have the chance to meet and learn from groups like Hays County Parks, Wimberley Birding Society, and SWCA Environmental Consultants, along with other organizations focused on protecting local habitats and wildlife. The Golden Cheek Birding and Hiking Giftshop will also be set up on site if you want to browse birding gear or pick up something fun.

This festival is also part of the City’s continued effort to maintain its Bird City designation, which really depends on community involvement and support.

If you’re planning to come out, registration is free and helps with planning. You can sign up ahead of time at wimberleyparksandrec.com, but you’re still welcome to drop in. It’s a simple way to spend a morning outside, learn something new, and be part of something that actually makes a difference for the environment here in Wimberley.
