Celebrating Parks and Recreation Month

Each July, communities across the country celebrate Parks and Recreation Month, a time to recognize the essential role parks, recreation, and open spaces play in building healthy, connected communities. Parks provide places to play, exercise, relax, learn, and gather with friends and family, while recreation programs create opportunities for people of all ages to stay active, discover new interests, and build lasting connections. Throughout the month, Wimberley Parks and Recreation was proud to celebrate everything that makes our parks, programs, and community so special and recognize everyone who makes it possible.

One of the highlights of this year’s celebration was the Parks and Recreation Month Proclamation presented at City Hall on July 16. During the City Council meeting, the proclamation recognized July as Parks and Rec Month in Wimberley and highlighted the importance of parks and recreation for Wimberley residents and visitors alike. It also served as a moment to celebrate the dedicated staff, volunteers, community partners, and supporters whose hard work helps keep our parks beautiful, our facilities welcoming, and our programs thriving year-round.

We also celebrated our incredible team during our annual Staff Appreciation Party. Every day, our staff works behind the scenes and on the front lines to provide safe, enjoyable, and memorable experiences for our community. Whether they’re facilitating swim operations, leading camp activities, maintaining our parks and trails, preparing facilities for events, or welcoming guests, each employee plays an important role in creating positive experiences for thousands of visitors each summer and throughout the year. During the celebration, we recognized several outstanding team members with our annual MVP awards. Congratulations to this year’s recipients for Camp Counselor, Camp Supervisor, Park Attendant, and Park Supervisor! Your leadership, professionalism, and dedication make a lasting impact on both your coworkers and the community you serve.

Of course, July has been filled with activities. Blue Hole Nature Camp and Wimberley Summer Camp are in full swing with weeks filled with adventure, creativity, and friendship. Campers continue to explore the natural world through hands-on environmental education, games, crafts, and outdoor activities while building confidence, learning new skills, and creating memories that will last long after summer ends. 

Swim season reservations have been consistently selling out throughout the month. Families, friends, and visitors from across Texas came to enjoy the cool spring-fed waters of Cypress Creek, making Blue Hole one of Wimberley’s favorite destinations during the summer. Our seasonal staff work hard every day to provide a safe, welcoming environment while ensuring guests could enjoy one of the Hill Country’s most treasured natural resources.

In addition to camps and swimming, we offered a variety of special programs designed to help people experience our parks in new ways. Participants enjoyed Owl Prowls, where they learned about the fascinating nocturnal wildlife that calls Blue Hole home, and Firefly Watch, an evening program that celebrated one of summer’s most magical natural displays. Community members also joined us for a special Community Workout on the Swim Lawn, taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings while staying active, and explored local trails during a Guided Hike that highlighted the area’s unique ecology, history, and scenic beauty. These programs encourage residents and visitors alike to connect with nature while learning more about the incredible environment.

Parks and Recreation Month is a reminder that parks are more than just places to play, they’re where we connect with nature, spend time with family and friends, stay active, and build community.
