City of Wimberley to Honor 10-Year Memorial Day Flood Anniversary with a Benefit Concert

Ten years ago, during Memorial Day weekend in 2015, the Wimberley community was forever changed by a devastating flood. Lives were lost, homes were destroyed, and the town faced many difficult challenges. But through it all, the spirit of Wimberley remained unshaken. Neighbors helped neighbors, first responders worked tirelessly, and the community was united by resilience and determination.

The flooding along the Blanco River on May 23rd and 24th, 2015, was a tragedy of enormous proportions. The river crested at 44.9 feet at the RR 12 bridge, an event classified by FEMA as a 120- to 150-year flood. Wimberley and San Marcos were hit by what was described as a “tidal wave” of water, sweeping away entire blocks of homes, uprooting massive trees, and leaving behind destruction on an unimaginable scale.

Across the affected areas, thirteen lives were lost, and hundreds of families were displaced. Emergency response teams faced overwhelming conditions as floodwaters surged. In total, the flood destroyed between 350 and 400 homes and left more than 1,000 residents without shelter in the immediate aftermath. Despite the devastation, the Wimberley community came together, proving that strength, compassion, and unity can sustain us through even the worst disasters.

Commemorating Resilience Through Music

On Saturday, May 24, 2025, we will gather at Blue Hole Regional Park for the Wimberley Strong Memorial Concert, an event to honor those who were affected by the flood, celebrate how far we’ve come, and support the first responders who serve our community.

The concert will feature the musical talents of Texas legend Gary P. Nunn and local favorite Jesse Stratton Band, their performances will set a backdrop for a day of remembrance, unity, and resilience.

Beyond the music, the event serves as a fundraiser for first responders, whose heroic efforts during and after the flood saved countless lives. Proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships will go directly to supporting their work, ensuring they have the resources to respond to future emergencies.
